Apperantly not. Look at the results. Most of you people said that you read them all cover to cover. I don't really think it matters what I say, people ususally tell the truth. But I do have some smily faces left over, if you want one.:D

And, besides, it's a voluntary poll, the results will be skewed no matter what you do.

"Apparently", "usually", "smiley". :) You asked, I shall deliver. ;) Oh, and one I missed originally, "misspell". :heh:

I usually skim through them once I get them (since I mail order most of my stuff) to see what they're like. That's the best/worst part. I'm either intrigued or disappointed. The ones I'm intrigued with, I read immediately or I keep for later reading.

The ones I'm disappointed with, I try to skim through again and see if they are worth keeping. If not, I don't bother reading them again.

I'm also turned off by bad art, especially the ones that look like sketches a 8-year old could do. I've never really forced myself to read a bad book or look at one with bad art. I tried once and I gave up (it was a thick hardcover).

D&d3E PH & DMG? Nope. Precisely because i don't enjoy reading them--bad organization, bad writing, bad layout.

But, big fat rulebooks that i consider readable? I'll read the whole thing. I read all of the AD&D1&2 PHs & DMGs, not to mention all the Complete... books that i bought, and a whole ton of other rules supplements (like Wilderness Survival Guide) cover-to-cover. I read all of Arcana Unearthed except the spell descriptions--pretty much in order, cover-to-cover. I can't remember for certain, but i think i read Aria cover-to-cover before i ran it. Sometimes a rulebook just sucks me in, it's so well written, and i read it cover-to-cover instead of skimming. Ars Magica 3 was like this--i even read the game fiction. Generally, even in books that i otherwise read in their entirety, i don't even glance at any game fiction. So any part of the game that is conveyed only there, and not in the "real" sections, will be completely unknown to me.

If, for some reason, i were going to run a D&D3E game, i'd probably read the core books cover-to-cover first.

I *do* read every book I intend to use heavily from cover to cover.

But, for most books, I flip through them first, looking for what interests me, and decide how / when I'm going to read it based on my first dig.

><SNIP!><

However, I've read every book I have for the campaign settings I do run - Oathbound, FR, and Arcanis to be specific. You learn a lot about the game by doing this - it's impressive how just reading through the spells in a book can give you new ideas for running bad guys or good guys or whatever.

Yep, though not always with enjoyment.
