Do you take gaming awards seriously?

About as seriously as a book or movie review. I'll scan the list of contenders to see if there is anything I'm not aware of or thought about looking at but never got around to previously.

I recall that the first edition of Ars Magica won an award, and from that I decided to pick it up, though I only found it by the time the second edition was printed. So yes, awards have influenced my decision-making for purchases.

The only awards I'm even aware of are the Ennies, which vex me because I follow a lot of people in a particular niche of the community who all got nominated and so I got to see post after post asking for votes.

I don't begrudge people for being excited for awards, particularly those who were nominated for them, but I personally find them... meaningless.

Mostly, word of mouth is king in this regard for me.

I have bought things because it won an award. I've learned of games I didn't know about because they were nominated. The awards I trust will continue to influence what I consider and buy.

Nope. I never pay attention to awards and I think I only voted once in the Ennies nominations (because there was an annoying banner asking for votes and I figured the only way to make it go away would be to vote).

Word of mouth is more than enough for me. I'm sure the awards are nice and make the authors feel a sense of accomplishment, but I'm not sure if they matter at all in the grand scale of things.

I have no interest in games winning awards. Especially when I know that just because a game producer doesn't give free product to the judges their games aren't considered. Knowing that removes any value from the awards that are given. I should probably point out that this is just my personal opinion.

I look into how the awards are choosen. I know what goes into the ENnies so I know I can respect their descions even if I don't agree with them. Awards that are choosen by a secret cabal though I don't care about.

I'm always on the lookout for games I don't know about, and awards are one of many ways for me to focus my searching and thereby increase my knowledge base.
