Do you take gaming awards seriously?

The thing I like most about the Ennies and Origin awards is not the winner (as that doesn't really matter to me - though I'm certainly happy when a product or company I like wins), but the nominations. It's nice to be exposed to products I otherwise would not be.

It depends on the award. I give a little more credibility to Origins than I probably do others.

That being said, my personal opinion about and experience with a product trumps awards.

I like to look at the nomination list and also make sure to see who won the ENnies for the year. I might not base my entire purchasing decision on this, but I do like it for seeing what is out there and what seems to be thought of highly by gaming peers.

An award is an indication that enough folks cared enough to promote it. That encourages me to give it a look. I think the real value of gaming awards is for people already in the in-circle. They can pat each other on the back and for folks who spent months or years working on a product, a formalized pat on the back means a lot. I think the hobby is better for their existence but I think they have a small impact on the industry.

Rabid fan boys voting for what they like best. Boom... credibility.

Again, the fact they don't even consider products that a company won't give to them. Very respectable and very fair.

But no, I have the internet. And most times I have it pointed at news relating to RPGs it's rare that something is nominated that I haven't heard of. Rare almost to the point of unheard of.

But what I have heard of and haven't tried being picked by its fans, that couldn't mean less to me.

I give gaming awards almost no weight at all, as the products involved almost never have relevance to my gaming. That probably says more about my gaming and tastes than it does the awards, of course. I'm not "in step" with the gaming mainstream, these days.

I put *much* more weight on word-of-mouth from people I know and whose opinions I respect.

I seriously consider games that have won the spiel des jahres

While I don't believe I'v chosen a game based on this, I have always been pleased with the winners I've ended up with.

And while I usually buy most of the products that win ennies or origins awards before they have won, the same can not be said.

It depends on the particular award. Usually, I'm going to be more interested in what games were nominated rather than the ones that won. And yes, being nominated does influence me, particularly if it's a game line or publisher I don't know much about. Nominations are a way to draw my attention.
