I prefer to have a computer at (not on) the table when playing or DMing.
I do not often need to look at anything for reference when playing or running a game, but when I do, I like it to be in a lightweight electronic format, rather than a heavy paper one.
If I was playing with a group that did not allow electronics at the table, I would probably not bring anything but dice, and rely on other people to look things up on the rare occasions that it was necessary.
