do you use the whip in your game and do you think it will be among the revised stuff

I really hope that they update the whip. currently it is a broken fix at best. its the only melee weapon in the game that is considered a "ranged weapon". in our game it is considered "ranged only from the aspect of dex to hit rather then strength. you cant use the ranged weapon feats with it but you can use the melee feats with it. taking lasher levels definatly makes it a more usefull weapon. Still . . . It will be interesting to see if it is addresses in the revision.

I don't know. There are aspects of the whip as ranged weapon that I like.

Nothing's better than getting an attack of opportunity on the slaver who's lashing your buds.

On the other hand, I would like it better if it applied penalties. There are too few weapons that entangle or stun or anything other than direct damage. And the whip should be the penultimate management tool.

I completely changed it in my game. Basically made it an exotic, finessable melee weapon which did base 1d3 damage and with 15ft reach and the trip/disarm bonus as per the book.

IRL it is great for holding an enemy at bay, and the 15ft reach simulates that rather nicely IMO. Having it as a missile weapon with a 15ft range and the inability to hurt anyone nerfs it to a ridiculous level.

I don't expect to see them fix it to my liking in the revised rules, but I intensely dislike the idea of a special prestige class that suddenly makes it a useful weapon with lots of neato tricks.

Cheers

whips

still, for 1 feat you get 2 weapons (whip and whip dagger) personally I thik the idea fro a whip dagger is stupid. but with d2 damage and no way to add extra dice (campaign starting item cost limit) I am lind of stuck with the whip dagger for my lasher's prime weapon.

Has anybody come up with any good "house rules" for the whip?

Whip and whip dagger are great weapons. THe tripping and disarming from a distance work very well. I used a whip from Level 1 Bard till he was level 20 bard/Lasher 4. Great fun and enjoyiment.

I'm very curious about the whip. Two of my players have recently switched to the whip as secondary weapon. One I can see why, he's playing a bard and I think he want's to play something like a Zorro type of character (but without the mask, though that might come)

The other player is a bit more weird, he's playing a paladin. Maybe he want's to dispense some punishment in the name of good ;-)

Anyways, both players still wanted their whip even after explaining exactly what the thing can and can't do...

Curious to see how the'll use it...

My ranger carries a whip. He's not proficient in it, but that's okay because the Trip and Disarm are touch attacks. It's come in handy a couple times:

1. My character mounted, facing an archer in a tree. Would take a long time to dismount, loose shield, climb tree. Takes short time to draw whip and whip archer out of tree (and onto ground for 1d6 dam).

2. My character facing an evil cleric. Evil cleric goes to cast spell, triggering my character's Readied action: my character whips cleric's holy symbol from evil cleric's hand. Without holy symbol, evil cleric loses access to most spells.

The neat thing about the 15' range of the whip is that your disarm attempts don't provoke AoOs. Unless, of course, your opponent has a 15' reach.
