I usually do what you did. I'm happy to let the PC's mess up their quest, but I try to warn them first. Usually one or two PC's pick up what I'm getting at and talk down the PC who's being a moron. I'm actually a little more "Are you suuuure?" at the gaming table than I am in real life. At the table I have this quest here that I've worked pretty hard on, and I know that if one of the PC's screws it up too much, the other's might get their Friday night ruined. That's not cool - so yeah, they get a warning shot or two first.
