Do You Write In Or Modify Your Game Manuals?

About 15 years ago I was given a really cool embosser as a gift. It embosses a circular seal with my initials in the middle and "From the library of" across the top and my full name along the bottom of the circle. I never, ever used it for anything until I started playing D&D earlier this year.

It quickly became clear that it would be good to be able to identify which books are mine at the game table, as books started getting passed around and loaned to friends, so I now emboss my seal on the title page of each D&D book I get.

Aside from that, no, I don't mark in the books.

I can't imagine intentionally marking up my books with anything beyond my name on the upper-right corner of the first page of endpaper.

The most I have modified a game book was for a repair job and subsequent warning. A miniscule droplet of cola fell onto a page in my 3.5 PHB and instantly ate through the ink in a section of text. I carefully penned back in what had been there, then wrote a long note on the same endpaper my name typically appears on about not drinking beverages around books.
(Especially WotC game books. Anything carbonated will strip ink in an instant, and even drops of water will warp pages like mad, regardless of how quickly they're tended too/cleaned up.)

I'll admit, I'm a bit of a condition stickler. For this reason, I no longer even loan books to most friends. Way too many bad experiences...

I recently pulled out my AD&D DMG and noted that I had penciled in the errata. I also added the xp section in pencil to my AD&D MM.

I have no problem writing in my books in theory, but in practice I haven't done it much in a while.

Back in the 1e days, the inside covers were blank... and I put charts, notes or whatever seemed helpful in them.

I'll write in my books to apply errata, because I hate having to check two places to see what the rules are.

However, more recently what I'll do is make a private wiki for myself & my players, then paste the relevant rules info INCLUDING errata & house rules, so all of us have exactly one place to look.

This is exactly why I love the 3.x SRD: it would be very frustrating to think that I might be violating copyright law by adding some convenience to a game I own, for the benefit of myself & people in my group who also own the game.

Cheers, -- N

Yeah, I had issues with my books being "claimed" by the wrong owner, even people who walked in with nothing in his hands, and everyone else saw it.

So I always write in my name, and I add in errata that actually address's rules issues, not cosmetic's, and I'll tab books, etc.. to help make it easier for to use and find things. Even my books which are signed by author/creators. These books are mine, they are not leaving my possession until I die, so I will use them however I wish.

But only in books for which I actually run games. Otherwise they only get my name put in them and left in otherwise pristine shape on my shelves until that day I actually get to run it comes along.

Absolutely. It's the easiest and most efficient way to record errata and houserules. But my name? Huh, that never occured to me.
