Do your characters swear?

Ours swear too.. mostly when they're mad. Though the one phrase I always thought was funny... "By the bristling balls of Heironeious!" Mostly because it came out of nowhere, and we lost about 10 minutes of game time laughing... Ah, distractions. But funny. :D

Well if it's appropriate to the character I will. Running my current Planescape game there's a lot of 'Pike off' 'Pike it' 'Piking' 'Sodding', etc. Though this led to problems when I was also playing in a Shadowrun campaign. I swear, I almost got my slangs confused between those games at times. Somehow the Harmonium officer calling you a bunch of 'orc drek' doesn't make sense in Sigil...

But in that Shadowrun campaign I was playing a Zory v Zakona in the small russian mob in Seattle in that game. While I didn't curse, in english, alot, my players learned some of more functional bits of russian that I've been able to retain. Most of that language I've lost, having once been fluent in it, since North Carolina has very few people you can speak in it to...

Swear? Often. Usually in good old colloquial American English, though sometimes --in one group-- some of us throw in a little Farsi for good measure...

We usually avoid made-up in-culture epithets, unless its for comic effect: Like my Greyhawk cleric who loves taking St. Cuthbert's name in vain, as in "Cuthbert H. Cudgel!" and 'St. Cuthbert on a crutch!".

If it's appropriate to the character, I'll use context appropriate swear words or phrases. Sometimes I've been really good at it (ask alsih2o) and others, not so much.

any of the colorful curses that come out of my mouth (or my characters) pale in comparison to general quality of the humor tossed around on game night.

I'm a mild swearer in real life and while I've never thought about it, looking back I can't think of a single time I've sworn in character. it wouldn't fit the tone of most games I've been in anyway.

Anybody ever invent replacement curse words? I've seen it done in several books and was thinking about doing it in my next campaign. They did it well on the Farscape show for instance.

If you've used this kind of trick, what made up words did you use to substitute for the real curse words? Just curious.

It's distateful to swear during a game. I like, or would prefer, the characters in my games to be as close to characters in novels as possible, in which case none of those fantasy characters sweared, cussed, or used any kind of crude language impedements, and when I hear a character cursing/swearing, it ruins the game for me.
