Do your PC's engage in in-character dialogue amongst themselves?

I ask because my group has some pretty decent roleplayers, but only when dealing with NPC's. They almost never engage in in-character dialogue between themselves (aside from simple commands, like "Reylan, you go there, I'll go here").

What about your group?

How can I get my characters to "talk" more amongst themselves?

it's fun most times, but the DM may miss out on what the characters are saying to each other if everyone is talking amongst themselves. plus, it may be distracting if the DM is focusing on a particular character.

but, if you can make it work, it is good fun in my opinion

In my group there is very little "in character" conversations between players, and it's starting to piss me off. I'd really like to do more roleplaying.

The only solution to the problem that I can think of is to keep badgering the players about it.

My group is fairly good about side conversations in character. It helps if you make a concerted effort to keep everyone in character (by paying money for being out of character, or another method). Also, you might try mentioning the idea to them, and let them know it's ok for them to talk in character when the DM isn't paying attention. Another way to help is to set up a way for the players to email each other conversations in character between sessions.

Thaumaturge.

Tons. Usually unless we say otherwise when talking to one another it is assumed we are in character. It has taken some getting used to, as DM I usually let the players talk about whatever they want and then present a 'final answer' to me. In this now it's a little hard to tell when we have made a final decision and tougher to deal with NPCs while we talk amongst ourselves as well as interact with the NPC.

Lordy yes! Actually, once I sit down to the table, there is very little that I say that IS NOT in character! :)

We once had a guy who was visiting the group and his character just happened to take a stance that was directly opposite my character's on a very touchy subject. My character got into a HEATED argument with him.

When we were done, he thought *I* was mad at him. I told him that *I* was not, but my character was certainly angry at his character - he was at a loss for words.... :p

the characters in my tuesday night game go on and on at each other, whether it is about slavery, eating the illusionists pet cow or societal status.

it has really made each of them a character more than a pile of stats. i am frequently amazed at how much sitting and just listening i do as dm. it is great :D

How do you go through gaming sessions without the players talking in character to each other? I can't fathom it. You really should try your hardest to get them to do so, it will make a huge diffrence in the way your game is played for the better.

My players are pretty good about this. Last session I think I sat on my thumbs for about an hour and a half, while they wrangled in character with each other.

Needless to say, they got bonus RP XP! :)

I tend to prefer talking in character when possible. Obviously, if we're talking about real life stuff, fine, but most of the time at the table I talk in character. I love having arguments based on my characters world view, rather than my own. Plus, emailing in between games for extra background information helps.

Not sure how to encourage it, though. Although making an effort as a DM to pick up what the characters talk and care about and making it into future adventures is a very good thing.
