5 out of 5 rating for Doctor Who: Adventures in Time and Space Core Set

So I love this game, but it would not be for all gamers. The game is simple with a ton of source material, easy to learn and true to the series. It is very heavy role play pushing combat to the last resort and actually it is really not a resort at all since it is deadly. Running is a better idea but that is faithful to the series, the Doctor never fights....

It’s worth noting that the game highlighted here seems to picture the 10th Doctor edition, but there has been two core products since (11th Doctor and 50th Anniversary editions). Each has improved upon the layout slightly to make the text a little easier on the eye. The system is informed by a number of game system ideas to make a flawless d6-based system. Characters are balanced out by a Story-points pool, that operate similar to Fate Points, which allow for characters of varying power levels. Leaving aside the tricky question of who gets to play the Doctor (if anyone), there is a remarkable amount of narrative latitude towards telling almost any type of weird sci-fi tale - with a distinct attitude towards non-violent solutions to conflict. Suitable for family play, due to the popularity of the franchise, it becomes an almost perfect intro game. Highly recommended.

The mechanics of this system do a marvelous job of recreating the fast-moving feel of a Doctor Who episode. In particular, the initiative mechanic which allows talkers to go first, followed by doers, runners, and then fighters, helps to ensure you feel you are right in that episode. Added to this the game's usefulness as a reference book for Doctor Who in general, I feel this is a perfect gift.
