Does anyone read books anymore?

Anyway, one fantasy author who hasn't been mentioned yet (which amazes me) is David Gemmell.

I was just about to mention him. :)

Also, John Ringo's very good, in a "really big body count and big guns and alien hordes" kind of way. He reads too fast, though.

Who else that hasn't been mentioned...I'm a fan of Ian Slater, who writes these...interesting...WWIII novels that, while they're a series, spectacularly ignore continuity. There was also a USA vs. Militia series with the same characters, one of which introduced me to the Metal Storm concept.

Daniel Easterman used to have his own little niche of religious spy novels, but I think he's stopped publishing.

Authors I would be interested in reading about (as opposed to "yet-another-list-of-fantasy-authors-I-like"):

Steven Brust
Steven Erikson
Glen Cook
R. Scott Bakker

For those who haven't twigged, Bakker's first novel "The Darkness That Comes Before" is pretty astounding. Not out yet in the States but the Canadian release (what is this with Canadian writers suddenly pouring out the mega-epics? Weird) is out and worth looking for.

Very different, very engaging and very, very good.

In addition to those mentioned, wanted to put a word in for Bernard Cornwell. He writes great historical fiction, and his Arthurian trilogy (The Winter King, Enemy of God, and Excalibur) is one of my favorites. He also wrote the "Sharpe's" series, among other good stuff.

I'm not really liking The Fifth Ring so much. I mean, its one of those books where I feel like its all "done before." Plus, I really dont believe the villain at all. He's just so rediculously evil and destructive. And why couldn't he have just called the Orlocks orcs?

That's because they're not orcs. They are Morlocks ala The Time Machine by HG Wells.

And if you find out more about the effect of the rings in the second book which is excellent!
