Does Conan speak with an irish accent?

Last night I dreamed about Conan and I heard him talking with an Irish accent (plus he looked a lot like Liam Neeson:)). The Irish accent makes since for the Cimmerian but of course most of us have been influenced by the movie and its Austrian grunt.

anyway have you ever wondered about the accents of various fictional characters?

Nah; Welsh.

Welsh would seem more Cimric than Irish, yup. :)

In my head I don't hear him as having much of an accent, maybe slightly Ulster (like me) with a bit of a Scandinavian element. Much as I love the Arnie films, the Conan in my head looks much more like the Marvel version and doesn't have an Austrian accent.

In several novels, Conan is described as having some kind of barbaric accent when he speaks.

You now can speculate on what looks like a barbaric accent in real world ...

but remember the difference between a civilized person and a barbarian.

As Howard wrote, a civilized person doesn't crush your head with his axe when you insult him !!

The historical Cimmerians were an Iranian tribe, so he'll have an Iranian accent, or possibly Armenian given where they ended up.

Now I can't get the idea that he sounded like Freddie Mercury or Serj Tankian out of my head

IIRC, Cimmerians were described as eventually being the forefathers of the Scottish highlanders. So Scottish, maybe?

Irish?! "top o' the Mornin' t'ye Thoth Amon!" or "Why yis, ifn' it be bleedin' it con doy!" Orrrr "Jaysus and begora, lass, tis a dragon!"

Welsh: No way! Why? Because his name is Conan, not Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.

Maybe you're thinking Summerians?

The Cimmerians of Howard were definitely more like the Celts geographically, or even the Picts, at the very least closer to Western Europe than the Iranians.

OP: To answer your question, Conan sounds almost exactly like Ron Perlman or, failing that, Michael Donovan from the cartoon "Conan the Adventurer". However, he looks exactly like Jason Momoa with maybe a few more pounds on him.

If I had to pick a modern day accent I'd say American Fake Barbarian voice. Lots of diaphragm and over-pronunciation, some grunting and guttural accentuations, with otherwise clear vocal tone. Think of it this way: their god's name is "Crom", his name is Conan. Deep O's and Ah's, not "Wheedly deedly doo".
