Does D&D even have a component of "midieval" anymore?

You know, I said before:

Operational definition of medieval: HAS swords but NO guns

Thus
D&D -> medieval
Star Wars -> not medieval
Shadowrun -> not medieval
Vampire -> not medieval

BUT STILL NOONE LISTENS TO ME

Although now that I think about it, the "has swords" bit is actually irrelevant, because every RPG has swords, medieval or not.

A handful of medieval trappings do not a medieval game make.

Fortunately, the question being addressed was whether it has a "component of medieval", which I think should be clear it does.

Obviously, D&D is properly a fantasy game, not a "medieval" game.

I'm a bit confused actually. I've been assured time and time again by many that D&D owes its roots to writers like Howard and Lieber. Conan and Fafrd are about as removed from medieval as you can be. Other than a very thin veneer, it's certainly not medieval.

Yet, now I'm being told that earlier editions are very medieval in flavour.

Color me confused.

Someone once said "The game is as medieval as you want to make it in any edition" and I think that person was correct.
