I see no reason why the spell can pinpoint the exact location of a creature. I guess I don't envision it as putting a green, yellow, red, purple, or gray circle around everyone you can see. I envision it as the caster knowing the information about each thing in the area of affect.
Of course, I hadn't really read the spell in 3.5. "Using the foul sight granted by the powers of unlife" is just silly. Why couldn't other "powers" grant this ability? Should we assume that all undead have a similar power?
It seems to me that this clearly an ambiguous spell that is open to interpretation.
