Why? I might not be aware of a rule, or is this a homebrew thing?
That's the rule though it's not spelled out in as simple terms as they should have.

Darkvision in darkness says: "If you have Darkvision, you can see in...Darkness within that range as if it were Dim Light."

Dim Light: "An area with Dim Light is Lightly Obscured."

Lightly Obscure: "You have Disadvantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks to see something in a Lightly Obscured space."

Passive Perception: "If the creature has Disadvantage...decrease the score by 5."

Oh no not the vision thing, I was referring to the "hearing things around the corner -5." But I think you're saying if they're standing still in ambush, you'd impose the same -5 to hearing as you would -5 to dim light. Reminds me of the old Move Silently vs Hiding skills :'D

The rules actually do sort of account for this; if you have the Keen Hearing trait, that's advantage on Perception skills involving hearing, and that would cancel out the disadvantage from it being in the dark and make it a flat roll.

To perceive something you use both vision and hearing. If you have disadvantage to see things, it's just disadvantage to your check. The rules don't really split the perception to hearing and vision when making a passive check to detect something as it uses both. As pointed out above there is a way to cancel that disadvantage out with keen hearing. But normally, it's just disadvantage regardless.

It can if you put weight on it. The mage hand cannot.
If we assume the pole is healed 3 ft. above the ground you would need to apply 150 lb worth of force to the pole. That’s a lot of force. You aren’t going to be tapping down the passage like that.

Give the imp a sack of gold and send it to walk ahead.
