Does EVERY attack form have a critical?

Note that even though the grapple check isn't an attack roll (it's merely like an attack roll), it may make sense to apply combat modifiers to the roll like with attack rolls. A shaken character probably should take a -2 to his grapple check, a large creature squeezing through a smaller area should take a -4 on the grapple check, and so on. I would certainly also apply morale modifiers from spells and bard inspirations too.

The good news, Patryn, is that more people will side with you because it's the correct interpretation. ;)

I'm just curious how you confirm a critical grapple. :\

Theoretically, a grapple could be a crit, confirmed by beating the original opposed grapple check made by the defender with a second die roll. I don't believe that really should apply, personally, since I don't consider a grapple check to be an attack roll.

Ergo, if it *is* an attack roll for the attack, then it *is* an attack roll for the defender. 20s for either one should be treated the same,

Under my "when in doubt with 6 seconds to decide, be nice to the defender" standard, my spot ruling was that it was not an attack roll.

I'll need to look at the FAQ again; I didn't find that entry when I looked before posting. But if the FAQ is explicit, that's what I'll use in the future. I don't have a problem with a defender roll setting the AC. IIRC, opposed attack rolls is one of the options for epic play.

The logical rule for grappling would be that a 20 by the attacker in a grapple check isn't an automatic success, but is still a threat if would be a success.
