Does LARP freak anyone else out?

Do you have anything else about me and people like me that you'd like to insult off hand?

I tried it twice. How much more open-minded do you want someone to be? Or do you always call people close-minded when they have a different opinion about something than you hold?

I found it freaky and bizarre and unpleasant. I found the people to be freaky, bizarre and unpleasant in BOTH games which had different people in them and were run in different ways. Two for two in those circumstances and I'm not willing to bother with it a third time.

You might not think it's weird but then like I said, you're a player, obviously you think there's nothing weird or freaky about it, otherwise you probably wouldn't be doing it. From the outside looking in, however, it is freaky and weird.

Some people think Micheal Jackson is a perfectly sane and normal adult with no hang-ups whatsoever... I don't.

No, I say you can be someone who is a scenester. There are people who are a stereotype. And somehow manage to perpetuate a stereotype. Our man cloakster might be one of these sorts. Many larpers are stereotypical.

Perhaps you should clarify. Did you find EVERYONE at both of these larps to be "freaky, bizarre and unpleasant"?

If so, you're making a generalization of a subset which includes myself. By extension, you are calling me freaky, bizarre, and unpleasant.

If you found SOME of the people there freaky, bizarre, and unpleasant, and it thus ruined your experience of both games, and your opinion of LARP in general, then great. You may continue to feel free to think that, and I would agree with you.

I think perhaps you overgeneralize.

I seem also to be guilty of overgeneralization, in the case of our cloak wearing example. I know plenty of people like this and plenty of other people who I can point to and say "this person is a scene". Michael Jackson is an excellent example. He is his very own scene.
Edit: I know a few people who wear a cloak occasionally. I've worn a cloak when my other jackets weren't clean or weren't warm enough. I am saying focusing your energies on matching your own idea of a stereotype makes you a dumbarse. I think I can stand by that. No one should want to fit a stereotype.

I will not disagree with you that a lot of people who LARP are weird, and freaky, and unpleasant. A lot of people I play tabletop are the same way. A lot of people I see at work are the same way. Some parts of my family are the same way.

DDK, Kamard, you disagree. Live with it. Agree to disagree agreeably, as they say, even though I don't actually know what the heck that's supposed to mean. But anyway, if you have to keep at it, might you at least take it to nutkinland?

Maybe I AM being over defensive.

I think I came into this thread predisposed to argument, because it was an anti-LARP discussion, and I am a larper happy to play the games. I think it is similar to going on, say, The Straight Dope's website or something and arguing a case for tabletop when you are surrounded by folks who don't like it or don't get it.

I think I will just apologize to anyone that I have offended, particularly DDK.

I am done arguing. I think larp is fun, for the most part, and some of the people irk me. Same with tabletop. Its just a pastime.

Some people hate it. Some people love it. Ok.

I'm cool with that.

I just don't like it to be generalized. More specifically, I hate to be generalized.

I'm not freaked out by it, but its not my cup of tea. Durring table gaming, I soemtimes get up to act something out (especailly as a DM), but I couldn't do it for more than a couple seconds.

DDK, I appoligize if what happened was too traumatized for you, but if it wasn't would you care to give some details as to what you found so creepy and/or disturbing?

Personally, I have never LARPed but I'd love to try. Afterall, I love acting, and I love gaming- why not combine the two?

I tried Vampire LARP one time. Of course it was the only LARP around and it was the one game I hate the most, so of course I didn't like it. I did meet some interesting people there, and when they weren't playing the game they were cool to talk to, but it did freak me out.

That said, if there was a different game around I might consider it, but it would depend on the game.

You can put me in the open-minded enough to consider it category as long as its not Vampire.
