Does rapid shot apply to crossbows?

I think if you have multiple crossbows loaded and have the quickdraw feat you can use rapid shot. Otherwise, rapid shot doesn't help with crossbows because of the reloading time. There is a rapid reload feat (even that exact name) in Sword and Fist, but even with that crossbows are slow weapons.

*slaps forehead* I should have hit google first :) I just found this:

Rapid Reload (Sword and Fist):
Prerequisites: BAB+2, proficiency with the crossbow used.
You can reload a hand or light crossbow as a free action that provokes an AoO. You may reload a heavy crossbow as a move equivalent action that provokes an AoO. You can only use this feat once per round.

But it still seems useless as you'll still only get one attack per round, with the advantage being you can move on that same round. I guess I was looking for something that increases the number of attacks/round with a crossbow. I'm trying to keep it a desirable weapon at higher levels.

Since you can take a free action in the middle of an attack sequence, it would be possible to reload a light crossbow for a second attack. However unless a character has 0.5 BAB progression (like a wizard), their is no current WotC printed way to make the crossbow a desirable high level weapon.

I thought there was an unstated rule (or stated somewhere I can't find right now) that multiple attacks do not apply to crossbows. This being a seperate issue from actually having to reload them. Perhaps this feat just needs to be reworded in more accurate terms. *scratches head*

Page 21 of the official D&D FAQ. In a question on rate of fire it says that crossbows cannot be used with the full attack action. However the next question says that well, you actually can with rapid reload and a hand/light crossbow or with a repeating crossbow.

The reason that multiple attacks do not normally apply to crossbows is because it takes time to reload them; it's not a seperate issue.

With Rapid Reload you can get two attacks a round with a light crossbow or hand crossbow (if you also have Rapid Shot or a high enough BAB).

One more question. Since using rapid reload would allow up to two attacks/round, does that mean the same rule as rapid shot would apply in that both attacks use the highest BAB but with a -2 penalty on each?

Let's not forget about the Repeating crossbow.

And then there's some enchantment ability that makes a crossbow loadable fast; it has about a 100 bolts in an extra-dimensional space.
