Does the Psion Get a Psicrystal for Free?

Does a Psion have to take the Psycrystal Affinity feat to get a psicrystal, or do they get it for free? I ask, because it seems like a familiar for the Psion and it is listed in the Psion section.

Yes. The Psion does not get a psicrystal for free and must burn the feat. Unlike the familiar for the wizard/sorceror, it is not listed on the psion table as a gained ability. Furthermore, in the SRD, it says:

SRD said:
A psicrystal is a fragment of a psionic character’s personality, brought into physical form and a semblance of life (via the Psicrystal Affinity feat). A psicrystal appears as a crystalline construct about the size of a human hand.

{Emphasis mine}

Sorry, I don't think this is the answer that you want.... :(

A 3.0 psion did get a psicrystal for free, though. They simply opened up the option by swapping it for a bonus feat instead.

You'll also notice both in the 3.5 SRD and Expanded Psionics Handbook that the psicrystal description is still contained within the section for the psion class as it was in the 3.0 SRD and Psionics Handbook. They simply forgot to move it to its own section.

The Erudite (In Complete Psionics) does get the Psicrystal for free unlike the Psion because it is stated so in the class abiities of the Erudite.

But check the Psion: won't find that entry in class abilities.
