Doing my part for the hobby

my version still has hobbits, ents, and balrog. :D

Yes, and elves that 'go over the sea'...
Maybe it wasn't a volcano, maybe it was a fundamentalist fringe bonfire...

Absolutely nothing. I'm a consumer of the RPG industry's products, pure and simple.

As has been stated, you're defiantly doing your part for the hobby...

that it was. my Rogue's Gallery went up in those flames.

i'm still friends with the guy who borrowed it. but his parents, who threw the stuff into the flames, and i don't communicate. (we also live 800 miles apart which is probably a contributing factor).

Mrs. Gneech took up the mantle of GM and began running a Star Wars game for the group recently; to help her in this new endeavor I am assisting as Group Rules Wonk, but she's doing all the heavy lifting. That makes three GMs in a group of four players -- how cool is THAT? =)

So I hear ya, on the mentor thing. ;)

So, I'm feeling all mentor-ish right now, and have a small sense of pride for having played a small part in growing the hobby a wee bit. :)

Well played! :)

So, everyone, what small things have you done to help the hobby we all know and love?

I've assisted in a gameday or two, helped set up an industry award program, and championed the first gamers' holiday. ;)

I run a game every other week, spend all my loot on gaming material, and just recruited a "noob" who had only ever played TMNT (and that was years ago). I also recruited my two sons, who love the game, but it's difficult to play with them, their attention wanders A LOT.

I hear you. My players have the attention span of a spatula.

Note: A spatula doesn't have an attention span. It is an inanimate object. Say hello to my players. Sometimes... ;)
