Even Free League seems to have taken note and want to check out what Gavin has fermented.

Dolmenwood uses its own OSE-based rule system. It's self-contained and doesn't require any OSE rulebooks. Translating it to another system should be trivial.
People say things like that and it undermines the actual design that goes into a product. OSE (or, in this case, the gently modified OSE) has certain expectations of play built into it. That's why people play it. That means that those expectations of play are also baked into this product. Or, at least, once hopes. "Trivial" adaptation to another ruleset means that the designer did not actually bother to make the thing for the rules they attached it to. I very much doubt that is the case with this project, given the length of development and the depth of design.

OK, I get that. Gavin basically house-ruled the system he knows best to fit the game world he's been working on for a decade. I interpreted your comment as if you have a distaste for OSE. What system do you think would work better for this game?

I assume OSE with his modifications IS the best choice since that is what it was designed for. I just am not interested in playing B/X. Now maybe it would work fine with Shadowdark, which I am getting excited about running, but I don't think so based on intial impressions. Maybe there is more dungeon delving in Dolemwood than Questing beast's video suggests, tho. It looks more like an old school hexcrawl.

I think you're right, the setting is mostly a hexcrawl. I'm sure adventures written for it will be full of dungeons that can be explored, but I don't know if Dolmenwood has any specific dungeon-crawling mechanics like Shadowdark. I saw a post in the Shadowdark Facebook group this morning from somebody that is super excited to use Dolmenwood as the setting for their Shadowdark game, so you wouldn't be alone if you tried.

I'm floored that this project is already at 3/4 of a million on day two, but Gavin does excellent work and deserves to be rewarded. September 2024 is too far away!

The Shadowdark book has more 30 pages of random encounter tables, with only four of those pages (detailing Caves and Deep Tunnels encounters) for underground environments, so certainly the author thinks the game works for hex crawling. But the torch mechanic, for instance, wouldn't be relevant much of the time in Dolmenwood.

(I'm tempted to get Dolmenwood in part just because I want to get the page after page of content on stuff like pipeweed for use in Shadowdark.)
