There are few enough of us that have been stationed in a foreign land 8,000 miles from home, where many of those around you either resent your presence or are actively trying to kill you, that truly understand the depth of Paladin's efforts.
The ability or inability of a soldier to purchase something has nothing to do with it. People and organizations send care packages to soldiers who are well-equipped and well fed, and even have a PX close by to buy sundries.
It's at those times when a small gesture from the folks back home says: "We appreciate what you're doing, soldier. Thanks."
Aside from paying taxes, a gesture like this is the closest the majority of Americans get to sharing the hardships of those who defend them.
