Donate Gaming Supplies to the Troops!

The D&D group I play in (as opposed to the quasi-D&D group I GM) is run by an ex-military guy and contains 2-4 ex-military players all the time. My DM's current job is running a non-profit foundation/institute that does anti-terrorism work internationally. Needless to say, although we're all Canadians, my DM and some of the players will be heeding your call and sending some donations along.

Good luck out there!

See: people and even countries that don't support the war do support the troops!

What if you want to send something from outside the US? Do you just add "USA" at the end?

My NCOIC here just happens to be a supervisor at a US Post Office in his civilian life and he says you are exactly correct. Add "USA" under the address and mail it as you would to any other US address.

One of the great assests of the Reserves is that we have a lot of pooled talent due to our divergent civilian careers.

We are Comm/Nav technicians (we work on radios, radars, and GPS systems, ect.) but in our shop we have a network administrator, a postal worker, a telephone repairman, a police officer, a credit investigator, a cable guy, a former longshoreman, a fireman, a farmer, a programmer, and a seminary student. The A-Team's got nothing on us. :p

Great Idea! I'm on it!

BTW: Lone Star Comics chain in the Dallas/Fort Worth area does something similar. They take books and send them overseas, preferably softcover books that are either 1) collections of short stories or 2) complete in 1 book (in other words, no trilogies unless bound in one volume). Not only do I buy stuff there and just drop it in the donation box, I also spend a lot of time/money at Half-Price books to get more for my money. I have heard that other organizations also do care packages of books and other goods (like toiletries, gum, non-perishable snacks, etc.)

Sweet idea, just make sure you have your customs papers in order. Check out booksfortroops.com for information on how to ship stuff.

Also, from my understanding, most guys over there have laptops. Instead of buying the actual books, does Wizards have PDF copies that could be put on a memory stick? Much easier to carry around a 1GB memory stick than a full library of actual books.

I'm making the final collection from my gaming group tonight, then I should be sending out a box of gaming stuff sometime this week.

What would get the most use? A complete set of core books and a few modules? Something else?

Pretty much anything gaming related. That includes both RPGs and other non-mainstream games.

If your sending used stuff, then what you send will probably be based on what you have. If you want to buy new stuff then I suggest sending something that you personally would like to recommend to other gamers.

Being somewhat confined in where we can go - lots of folks deployed in the Middle East are open to trying out anything for a change of pace. So, not only is this an opportunity to support the troops, its also a good way to introduce your favorite games to a highly receptive audience.

Some do have laptops, but not everyone.

My idea was to create a repository for gaming stuff for people to use while they are stationed over here. Books would probably work better for that than software (and it avoids the whole copyright issues).
