There is already an option to disengage without provoking AoOs. What you cannot do without provoking is moving from one enemy to another one, or moving around somebody.

In my eyes, it's much less about what kind of movement makes you more vulnerable. It's about the tactical positioning in combat. With AoOs as they work in RAW it is possible to punish an enemy who tries to move around the front line fighters to the squishy spellcasters and archers (or even to stop him entirely, by using the AoO to trip). If it was entering the threatened area that provoked, not leaving it, there would be no reason to stay within fighter's reach instead of charging the mage.

He does love that line. That's the second or third time he's put it in a thread I started.

I read it as him saying, "I know you are, but what am I?" for lack of anything better to contribute to the question posed in the OP.
I was actually applauding your insight into other people's true natures by comparing you to an omipotent deity, but I suppose that is also a valid interpretation of the phrase.

Point taken.

But, what if there was an an AoO entering and leaving?

OK, great. Whatever. Go play around in someone else is thread now, please, if you're not going to be helpful and discuss the matter posed in the op.

What if we keep the AoO for leaving combat as it is, but add an AoO for enterting combat?

Personally I think it would get annoying. There are enough rolls in combat as-is.

I also believe it would be forgotten about every other move so you'd end up back at square one. I guess if you had a checklist or something you might always remember, but.... that's kind of boring to me.

It does make sense, but as stated before it would end in long standoffs that don't really help the game

however...

retreating from a battle does not immediatly mean getting an AoO in my groups house rules, only when using an attack option to flee (we have movement intiative and combat initiative as seperate parts, but things such as charge and bullrush, and movement related event goes down in the movement...yeah, it can get confusing and annoying, but things are different as to make it easier on the DM [who also usually has a character since we have a small group])

so if you move away with normal movement, thats fine, but if you flee, AoO

and I think I might add the entering threatened squares granting an AoO BUT if the attacker does that they cannot move that round, unless they have spring attack (yay for spring attack!)
