Don't multiclass if...

There are some classes that continue to gain good abilities that stack on their existing abilities. I'm not talking about another use of a smite but rather an increase of a base ability like say a monk's damage dice.

Which classes do you think the player's shouldn't multi-class out of.

Monk
Soul Knife

Kensai (Complete Warrior)

I'm sure there are others I'm missing, but those with the big ones off the top of my head.

Mechanically the paladin's lay on hands is paladin level dependent.

Spell casting classes are another big stacking class power category that gets hurt by multiclassing.

Rogue sneak attack loses a lot from not continuing.

Bard lore and mystic music go by stacking level.

So everybody but fighters, rangers, and barbarians really.

Paladin for me. They simply lose too much...lay on hands, smite, special mount...all are class level dependent and worthwhile, IMHO.

Yeah, never minding multiclassing, the spellcasting classes even lack decent range of prestige classes to enter since they tend to have so little to give up other than the spell progression.

I agree completely. Multiclassing is for me a way to better match the character abilities with the character concept (for instance, Fi6/Ba2 for an educated, art-loving knight. Usually, I keep the ratio of the different class levels approximately constant, too.

Psychic Warrior

Unless there is a verry compelling story reason to leave this class I have seen no reason to leave this class. The Psychic Warrior is basically a PrC unto itself. At just about every level there is something new and kool to do with it.

This is a little pointless since the original poster is obviously speaking in terms of mechanics.

Spellcasters are pretty much screwed by multiclassing unless its into a caster prestige class.

In terms of multiclassing between the base classes, multiclassing is mechanically usualy a bad idea except for maybe some mixing amidst the melee oriented classes.

Most other combinations either are going to be prestige classes, or require what I call the "zipper" prestige classes (Eldritch Knight or better Spellsword, Arcane Trickster etc) to be effective mechanically.
