But the GM has some issues with the way the game is going and with me specifically, so the game is now "on haitus

Ah, yes...Haitus, that island state in the Pacific, 50th state of the union. Many of my PCs and campaigns have wintered there, only to become permanent residents.

Whenever I see a post like this, I check their location to see if they live nearby, since I am such a campaign nut.

So far, no luck. :(

Yeah, I cry with jealousy everytime I read about all of these cool campaigns people are running. I would kill to play in a long running campaign and actually develop a character. Maybe someday. :\

Considering that I've never been in a campaign that has lasted longer than four months I can say all of mine have bit the dust before their full potential was realized. It sucks.

What is with campaign crib death? I mean I constantly hear about epic ideas for campaigns that only fall apart after a few sessions. Is it that the GM (or players) bit off more than they can chew or are there other factors involved? I have had the good fortune to only be a part of only one or two campaigns that ended prematurely.

For me, it usually seems to be either the DM gets tired of the game quickly or several of the players get tired of the game quickly. Then nobody is having any fun, so we start a new game or campaign, and it happens all over again before you know it. :(

...you make a really cool character up, and the campaign falls apart just after a few sessions? That really bugs me... Just wanted to share that :)
I hate it even worse when I make a really cool character and then get him killed through my own stupidity after only a few sessions. :(

I've done that too...but I still hate it more when the campaign simply fizzles. There's that ingredient of sheer futility that adds the extra-bad taste.

It happens a lot with online games. Because you're not even meeting face to face, a lot of games just start getting ignored by their GMs when other priorities arise or they start to get bored with it. More than half the online games I've joined have died prematurely.

And I too have a binder full of PCs that I've made up, even for tabletop games, that have been played a couple times and then shelved. Quite often it boils down to other things coming up in people's lives or the campaign not quite having the fire the GM had hoped when he started.

Its mostly happened to me in online games, I have a folder of them on my laptop.
In Local games, I have a few stranded characters, but I dont really miss them. The games were obviously failing, and a fun Character in a bad game only lasts so long.

I mostly run games, and a short campaign is six months. The only one I felt was stranded was due to player changes, 1-4 sessions before the showdown with the BBEG. This was the long arc guy who had destroyed a town which was the basis of the first game. The players gone 2nd-9th level, had fought him once already, and were in the midst of laying a trap for him, when the game lost 1/2 the players. Two others ended after finishing the first long arc.

I have had a few, thought most are so specificaly tied into various homebrew worlds it would be hard to ressurect them in another campaign and still retain their coolness. I don't mind making new characters, so I haven't minded.
