D&D General Doomsday Weapons?

It's D&D Adamantine rods not tungsten.

I think the velocity alone is similar to a nuclear bomb when it hits.

They actually planned that out but getting a 20 ton rod into orbit and aiming it are impractical.

How long would it take to reach the ground? Because IIRC the deck of a spelljammer is technically something capable of supporting the rod for the purpose of being a valid target for conjuration spells. The problem is choosing an altitude where it will land in less than 1 round per caster level.

Depends if it was propelled or free fall.

On that metempsychosis tweak
A particle accelerator that is poorly administrated would be a nice doomsday weapon. Some other suggestions include:

1. Being rude your mother.

2. Stepping on a crack in the sidewalk.

and, of course

3. Spitting on Superman's cape.

And the other cool thing about the kinetic bombardment idea is that it can't actually be legitimately vetoed as inappropriate to a fantasy setting because it was described in part 3 of the classic fantasy adventure novel Gulliver's Travels (albeit using boulders rather than tungsten rods) centuries before it was ever proposed as a real weapons system.

You don't even need to throw a proverbial mountain.

Some 40+ ton Spelljammer ships could theoretically take a few Adamantine rods up high and bombs away. Good luck hitting anything in particular but le boom.

Towing asteroids or Dwarven citadel as a missile....

Be it's not an end if the world scenario but kiss a city good bye along with anything within several miles out to 50.

"I wish that I could throw a brick so hard it travels at six hundred million miles per hour!"
--throws a brick at the ground (or at anything, really)--

Le boom, indeed.

One of the sidebars in Grand History of the Realms hints that a dragon nation built and tested an arcane beam similar in concept to the Death Star.

Defiling magic with a built-in positive reinforcement spiral can have quite the impressive effect, too. Ask anybody on Athas about it.

How about a combination grey-goo/midas-touch scenario?

A botched attempt to create the Philosopher's Stone leads to an uncontrolled chain reaction: Anything the stone comes into contact with turns to gold, and anything that comes into contact with something the stone is touching also turns to gold. Anything touching the secomd object turns to gold as well, and so on, and so on, as long as an unbroken chain leading back to the stone exists. Left unchecked, this will rapidly convert the entire planet into gold.
