DR as related to creature damage

So, I the party fought a couple of Lavawights today (EHL monster) and I noticed that they have DR 10/-.

What does this translate to in terms of what DR it can penetrate with its weapons?

Nothing special that Im aware of.

If ya look in the MM 3.5 (page 307) where it discusses DR, as it mentions each type (xx/magic, xx/epic, and so on), it discusses a monster's ability to overcome DR (magic= natural weapons treated as magic; epic=natural weapons treated as epic; etc). No such text exists for the xx/-- entry.

Thanks to both of you. That's the way we were leaning and also the way we played it.

Anyone out there got a different opinion, just for sake of the debate?

Not I. :) And to add to the evidence supporting the way you ran it, barbarians get DR x/- as a class ability, and it does not allow them to penetrate any kind of DR at all. ;)

When I said "etc", i got lazy :)..the rest of the DR guys...those with aligned subtypes (lawful, evil, good, chaotic) can overcome damage reduction of the same type (e.g., a bearded devil has the Lawful and Evil subtypes...its natural weapons, and any weapon it wields, are treated as lawful-aligned and evil-aligned)

Cool. Thanks for the advice. By your logic, Jester, would a Warlock (who gains DR/Cold Iron) be able to penetrate DR/Cold Iron with his attacks?

Thanks,

AoA

Nope. "Material" DR (such as cold iron, adamantine, silver) doesnt grant the monster the ability to overcome any type of DR. (Again, see page 307, or look at the Lycanthrope and Sprite entries in the MM 3.5). Same with "damage type" DR (piercing, bludgeoning, slashing)...no special ability to overcome DR is granted.
