DR question

Crothian

First Post
In the MM under the description of DR it says creatures with DR x/magic have thier natural attacks count as magic to get through other creaturees DR. Does this apply to all types of DR?

The reason I ask is my shifter has dr 2/silver and since we are facing and getting our butts kicked by a vampire it would be useful if my natural attacks counted as silver to help get through its DR. Thanks.

No.

And the principle example of this sort of thing is lycanthropy, ironicly enough.

Hrm ... where's the RAW on that?

Just seems sort of odd to me ... why do magic creatures strike as /magic at all? I mean, I know THAT is in there, but is there anything that goes toward intent? It's sort of a bizarre rule if no other DR / Creature type interactions function that way.

In the Monster Manual glossary, under DR, you'll find that creatures with DR X/Magic are treated as if their natural weapons were magic, and creatures with DR X/Epic are treated as if their natural weapons were epic, and creatures with an alignment subtype are treated as if their natural weapons or wielded weapons were aligned.

You won't find any such note for silver.

Now that we have that clarified and thank you. Should it be this way? Or should all DR be treated the same? Is this a mistake in the rules?

A creature with magic based DR has a magical body that repells mundane attacks. This same protection infuses thier body and lets them slice through similar protections on others. The epic DR is a variation on this.

Alignment based DR operates somewhat differently, with being able to get through alignment based DR functioning of Subtype, rather than having the opposite DR.

Material based DR is the creature being vulnerable to that material. A lycanthrope body can ignore most minor wounds and suffers less from major blows. But silver is their bane. Being vulnerable to silver does not make their attacks silver.

And damage type based DR tends to be the ‘common sense’ DR. You see a skeleton has no flesh to cut into, nor organs to pierce, so take out you mace or hammer. A big soft slug with DR 15/Piercing douse not automatically have its natural weapons deal piercing damage.

DR/- means the target is really tough. It is on its own getting through DR.

Damage Reduction (Ex or Su): A creature with this special quality ignores damage from most weapons and natural attacks. Wounds heal immediately, or the weapon bounces off harmlessly (in either case, the opponent knows the attack was ineffective)...

Some monsters are vulnerable to piercing, bludgeoning, or slashing damage.

Some monsters are vulnerable to certain materials, such as alchemical silver, adamantine, or cold-forged iron. Attacks from weapons that are not made of the correct material have their damage reduced, even if the weapon has an enhancement bonus.

Some monsters are vulnerable to magic weapons. Any weapon with at least a +1 magical enhancement bonus on attack and damage rolls overcomes the damage reduction of these monsters. Such creatures’ natural weapons (but not their attacks with weapons) are treated as magic weapons for the purpose of overcoming damage reduction.

A few very powerful monsters are vulnerable only to epic weapons; that is, magic weapons with at least a +6 enhancement bonus. Such creatures’ natural weapons are also treated as epic weapons for the purpose of overcoming damage reduction.

Some monsters are vulnerable to chaotic-, evil-, good-, or lawful-aligned weapons. When a cleric casts align weapon, affected weapons might gain one or more of these properties, and certain magic weapons have these properties as well. A creature with an alignment subtype (chaotic, evil, good, or lawful) can overcome this type of damage reduction with its natural weapons and weapons it wields as if the weapons or natural weapons had an alignment (or alignments) that match the subtype(s) of the creature.

When a damage reduction entry has a dash (–) after the slash, no weapon negates the damage reduction.
