FYI - Dragon #3, page 7: Notes on Women and Magic.

... believe me, we've gotten classier over the years.

And thanks to the Dragon magazine CD archive, I now am stupid.

It has rules for Female Classes...

Because obviously the D&D classes from the white box edition were for MALE characters, right?

So someone had to write rules for FEMALE characters too!

I guess we have made some progress. I just find some of the art in fantasy products a little absurd.

However, I pay attention to Dragon more for the articles than the art work.

Actually, if memory serves (and the older I get, the less I like to rely on it), the whole question of female stats compared to male stats was a topic of contention back in the day. I mean a woman could NEVER have an 18 Strength, right... Right...? Nevermind Xena Warrior Princess:D

Actually, the ad in question is one of the few cases where the woman (or demoness...or something) is interacting realistically with her low-cut costume.

Baerendur, your memory is correct. I think under 1st edition rules, a non-fighter type (anything but barbarians, cavaliers, fighters, rangers and paladins) had a maximum strength of 18 (+1 to hit, +2 to damage.) I think a female human fighter-type could have a maximum strength of 18/50 (+1 to hit, +3 damage) while a male human fighter could have a strength of 18/00 (+3 to hit, +6 to damage.)

As for the arguments on this being a realistic approach, it never quite worked. D&D simulates an environment like fantasy novels and legends. The heroes and heroines in such works are often larger than life. Also, in a world of magic and sometimes meddling deities, would humans necessarily be the same as those found in our world. (If you think about realism, then you have to wonder why there was not a mechanic for lung damage from fireballs.)

i qualify as a "don't like the voguesque covers" type of guy. i said it once and i'll say it again...

17: max female dwarf or half-elf str, max male halfling str
18(50): max female human or male gnome str
