Dragon 331 has arrived

I was suprised to find this in my mailbox today, since I just got my last Dungeon yesterday (the Dungeon was shipped 3/22 and the Dragon is listed as shipping 4/19!!!)

I don't have a lot of time to go through the contents thoroughly now (on my way to a Phillies game tonight).

Editorial - Only a Ninja can kill a Ninja
The Point of Pole Arms - Description, stats & feats for numerous pole arms

Can you elaborate a little on the pole arm article? Do the feats support a good pole arm fighting style?

ERIK MONA: Articles I'd like to see next are the gem dragon PC characters next (don't leave them out, please, I hate how they haven't been getting any attention by game designers yet plenty of us players and DMs would love to see more stuff written on them).

Other articles I'd want to see is articles based off of the new classes like new ki powers for Ninja (substitution level-type stuff), new feats geared for Scouts and Ninja, new invocations for Warlock, new feats for Soulknives, and epic-level feats for all the new classes like Hexblade and all the rest.

Speaking of epic feats, I'd like to see more epic material in Dragon, too.

MR FILTHYIKE: Then those Eberron artricles should be cut as well from the magazines. No, I say we need to see more Faiths of Faerun articles as well, I missed those too.

None of the articles "wowed" me. However, I think this issue has the most articles I would consider using in recent history. They were all pretty solid articles with some interesting ideas.

It's funny, because even though I wasn't "wowed" by the articles individually, I was really impressed by this issue as a whole because I think I will eventually use something from each article.

Plus, holy cow, I really liked the article on polearms. I know what kind of character I'm playing next. :D

What sort of stuff would you rather be seeing? --Erik

I'm looking for ideas, inspiration. And issue 330 failed in that regard. This fellow's critique mirrors my own opinion...

I like the historical bits, or characters and plots inspired by legend. Like I said, the Beowulf issue had plenty of meaty stuff in it. So much of the character stuff would only ever be allowed by Living Greyhawk it's of little or no use to me. No DM I play with would allow any of the feats, gear, spells etc. I just skim over those articles. That leaves me with the news features, comics, fiction and setting ideas. 330 was thin in usable material (yes, I mean usable to me. Others mileage may vary, I'm well aware). Since I buy Dragon issue to issue, unless I find at least one attractive article, it's a no buy.

I'm loving Dungeon right now, and wish there were ongoing articles like Monte or Wil's in Dragon. Something I could bank on being interesting or useful every single issue, or even just fun to read. When that happens, consistently, I think I'll subscribe.

Did I mention the Beowulf issue was great? 'Cause it was. And the bit on Gilgamesh was a keeper, too. Issue 330 lacks anything as good as those, and 331 looks much the same.

I'd like to see another Missing Dragons article on the chromatic dragon gaps (Orange, purple, yellow). Those dragons were very interesting and it'd be great to see them in 3E.

It's good for GMs and PCs, I think. NPCs are good for flavor and can give PCs ideas of how to play a certain odd race or something. I really liked the Dire Lion Monk from ... before. And there was another interesting NPC in there too. I forget which issues..

You know, I was just going through old issues and thinking how much I'd like to see the old "Rogue's Gallery" reappear. Give some NPCs for various campaign settings (with potential use as PCs). Give stats for the PCs in books, some characters for the various campaign settings (but stay away from the super-high level NPCs), plus some characters that aren't tied to any setting.

One feat I like allows you to attack with the haft of a polearm. However, it doesn't state if it can be used against adjacent characters when you have a reach polearm. If so, that would definitely fit the bill. There is also a feat that allows you to make an attack with a pole arm as if the pole arm had reach and another that does the opposite. The rest mostly give you more options.
