Dragon 379 - Adventurers of the Realms

The newest installment of this series is up and its another set of paragon paths that require multi-classing (or being a hybrid). I love these types of paragon paths and I hope that WotC creates more for a generic setting. By which I mean, they don't a FR regional benefit as a prerequisite. I think my favorite combo is the swordmage-shaman; the image of your spirit companion jumping into your sword to give you more power is very evocative IMO.

I've gotta say, I really dislike the dual-class-requirements for paragon paths. Brings up bad memories of prestige classes where you had to plan out your character's entire advancement around them...

The flexibility of prestige classes is one of their strengths, IMHO.

I don't think it's that bad. I mean, it's a single feat, that you can retrain into at any level you want.

I really liked the one that was a mix of Barbarian with Sorceror. I liked the concept of the Rage Mage from 3.5. It's a Paragon Path that I would actually be interested in.
The abilities seemed really cool and definitely lend themselves to narrative niftiness during combat. Slicing through a foe and breathing fire on his friends seems fun in my mind.

I also adore these Paragon Paths. They both inspire me to consider class combinations I might not have considered and help flesh out the mechanics of these combinations beyond what is possible with just the multiclass or hybrid rules. The Thay Infiltrator PP in the last article in the series directly inspired my current LFR character, a cleric of Selune multiclassed into ranger.

I do have a mild concern about the mechanics of supporting both multiclass and hybrid characters. For example, some features of the Underchasm Darkwatcher (warden and warlock as prereqs) require you to have Warlock's Curse, which I don't believe you have if you're a warden multiclassed into warlock. Note that I don't necessarily consider this a flaw in the PP design, but I think the article should note such issues or clarify the designer's intent.

This is what I was going to say, but EN World got too slow when I first read it. Its also another way to extend the multi-classing mechanics for those who want to go down that route.

I found the flavor of these articles to be impressive. It really helps support the mutliclassing system. I plan to implement them in my games without the background requirement.

I don't think it'd really be a problem to ignore the FR-specific prerequisites to allow the PP to be taken. It doesn't really contribute anything to the class.

Me too... except the name. :)
