Dragon 382 - Winning Races: Dusk Elf

The first "Winning Races" article of this month introduces the first elven sub-race in 4e. Dusk elves were originally eladrin refugees who fled to the world instead of fighting in the war between the eladrin and the drow; though thought of as traitors by their eladrin cousins, as well as Corellon, Sehanine embraced these refugees, who eventually turned into dusk elves. I like the article, even if I'm not totally crazy about the feat that allows you to become a dusk elf, but I really like the other feats, backgrounds, and the PP.

I thought WotC was very specific about there not being sub-races of elves.

And they give us the "dusk elves" who shadowmeld at night.

What.

Edit: EMO nigh-sorry, dusk elves, at that.

What.

They're actually the third in 4e that I can think of... They've already published two in the FRPG: wood elves and wild elves; then there's the eladrin subraces of sun and moon elves, so I guess that sort of makes 4 others.

I'm going to give WotC props on this one. They not only gave us a race of neutral elves (which doesn't happen often), they also gave some good story seeds along with it.

My only critique is the art. I think they could have done better at giving them a unique look.

This isn't a sub-race in the same sense that 3.5 or earlier elven sub-races existed. They are mechanically identical to elves, and are only distinguished after the player decides to pick up a specific feat.

I hope they do something like this for Bralani and Ghaele for Eladrins, a feat that represents a fey title or allegiance that leads to an Eladrin character becoming somewhat like the Monster Manual entry for those types of Eladrin.

I could see more of these for Elves and other races as well. Dwarves with a special link to earth spirits, and some lost Human bloodlines.
