Dragon Breath Q?

So Sunday the fighter failed a Ref save vs a blue dragon breath.

So how would you handle what would happen to his equipment (magi items)?
If it helps we are still playing 3.0
This is a short adventure and when it is over they have 3 choices to go to and one has a black dragon in it so any help would be usefull for an encounter with that dragon also.
Thanks in advance..............

A natural 1 really, Did not know that.
Do you have a page number as I'm at work and only have a PDF to look at. So I can know what to do for future encounters and how to handle if someone does roll a natural 1.

Nope, I'm at work so I can't provide a reference. You can see here though:

http://www.d20srd.org/srd/combat/combatStatistics.htm#savingThrows

In particular:

"A natural 1 (the d20 comes up 1) on a saving throw is always a failure (and may cause damage to exposed items; see Items Surviving after a Saving Throw). A natural 20 (the d20 comes up 20) is always a success."

and

http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicOverview/spellDescriptions.htm

"Unless the descriptive text for the spell specifies otherwise, all items carried or worn by a creature are assumed to survive a magical attack. If a creature rolls a natural 1 on its saving throw against the effect, however, an exposed item is harmed (if the attack can harm objects). Refer to Table: Items Affected by Magical Attacks. Determine which four objects carried or worn by the creature are most likely to be affected and roll randomly among them. The randomly determined item must make a saving throw against the attack form and take whatever damage the attack deal."

PHB 3.0 : p.150 Items surviving after a Saving Throw...

Only on a 1 an exposed item may be harmed:

Choose the first four items on the list that your character have.
Then roll to determine which of the four is actually struck.
This item then gets a saving throw if its magical and the appropriate damage.
Non-magical items don't get a save.

List:
Shield
Armor
Magic Helmet
Item in Hand
Magic Cloak
Stowed or sheathed weapon
Magic bracers
magic clothing
magic jewelry
anything else
