Dragon fighting techniques

I'm curious as to the different techniques players out there have used to kill dragons. Specifically I'm interested in how a high level cleric or mage/sorcerer might be able to battle an ancient red wyrm. The wyrm's massive SR make most spells harmless and an incredible AC makes it impervious to most melee attacks. I know the vulnerablilites like in a very low touch AC attack and a relatively low reflex save but I'm not sure how to exploit that. Any class experiences/stories are welcome.

Buffing spells ahoy, hitting it again and again with weapons as hard as you can, praying and pleading.

I have very bad experiences with dragons as a player. Although pleading and fast-talking has kept me out of a lot of trouble.

As a DM, they tend to be interesting fights.

Yup, last tiem our group fought dragons that was my tactic, i was playing a fighter/sorcerer. Pumped myself up as much as i could, then used the terrain to my advantage. I was in a city so there where lots of oppertunities to get cover and launch sneek atacks. Spring attack helps with that too.

How'd you sneek attack a dragon?

I think he said Spring attack, but I digress.

Dragons are actually easier to sneak attack than humans by the rules. They're large creatures with an extanded body length, so if you can ground them or have access to magic that will let you keep pace with them while they're aloft (good luck) flanking them tends to be a really easy option.

ah... i interpreted him as saying he got his sneek bonus by hiding and then attacking... Blindsight kills that...

Flanking now.. hehe.. what kinda stupid dragon stays on the ground?

what kinda dragon just doesn't continually hover? :)

Thanks for reminding me. I really need to go check for errata on Bola's.

If there is none, then that's your answer right there :)

Does blindsight actually eliminate hiding attempts? I know Dragons have ungodly spot checks and they can pick up invisible characters, but I thought hide still worked.

i actually meant sneak attack, just not in the rogue ability sense. I was trying to get at the idea of hit and run tactics. Hide behind cover, then come out and attack, then cover again. Oh yeah, fly spells are uber helpful when doing this.

always how i read it. "The creature usually does not need to make Spot of Listen checks to notice creatures within range of its blindsight ability."

now the usually i always wondered about... i think they just put it in as a "cover your ***" clause because they never really say what exactly blindsight is.

sense vibrations? thats sound... silence kills that.
sense light? that regular vision, darkness kills that.
echolocation... silence
scent... scent illusions

anyway, that's the way i run it. :)

Fair enough. Will have to go reread that. I very rarely DM dragons, or any kind of creature with blindsight, so it hasn't been a big thing in my DMing vocab.
