Yeppers- just havent done it yet.

The dragon formula is WotC's method of converting dragon's from 2e to 3e. If you reverse engineer all the dragons in 3e you can find a pattern that they apparently used to determine SR, HD, ability scores, etc.

That's cool. I didn't know they had a formula. I just thought they came up with the system to create the dragons and then just went to work with what looks good.

Yeppers- like this for example. Note that there are one or two dragons that do not follow this formula, but it works for the others.

Tiny dragons start with Str 11; Small dragons start with Str 13; Medium dragons start with Str 17.

Str increases by +2 points for each age category with the following exceptions:

Each age category spent Large increases the Str by an additional +2.

Moving from size Large to Huge or Gargantuan to Colossal increases Str by an additional +2.

Dragons also follow a size pattern (listed in order from age category 1 to 12):

T, S, M, M, L, L, H, H, H, H, G, G

S, M, M, L, L, H, H, H, H, G, G, G

M, L, L, L, H, H, H, G, G, G, G, C

Note the number of times a dragon remains in each size category (two for Medium, two for Large [with the exception of the gold and red dragons], four for Huge [again except for gold and red dragons], three for Gargantuan [again excepting the red and gold dragons])

Hmmm... What if the dragon starts out as a large wyrmling?

None of the dragons in the MM or MoF books start at Large. The OA dragons all form from the Yu Lung (which starts at Tiny) so they follow a similar albeit slightly different pattern perhaps (all being born from the same young).

The dragons in the ELH start at Huge, and there is somewhat of a pattern, though it is not completely set and there are only two dragons in there.

If ya wanna start it at Large, I guess you could and follow this pattern:

L, L, L, H, H, H, G, G, G, G, C, C

Based on the size progression of the red and gold (M, L, L, L, H, H, H, G, G, G, G, C).
