Dragon Hide

Cog

First Post
Okay, the group I'm DMing in RttToEE killed a young blue dragon, and promptly carved it up. The question I need to know is how heavy would the hide be to carry? According to The Draconomicon, the body size of a medium-sized blue dragon is 7 feet by 3 feet, and the dragon weighs a total of 320lbs, but it doesn't state the weight of the hide.

*nod* What mmadsen said. Generally, just eyeball hide weighing about 10% of body weight. Should be close enough.

don't forget a Medium dragon hide can't be made into much. ;)

Dragonhide: Armorsmiths can work with the hides of dragons to produce
armor or shields of masterwork quality. One dragon produces enough
hide for a single suit of masterwork hide armor for a creature one
size category smaller than the dragon. By selecting only choice
scales and bits of hide, an armorsmith can produce one suit of
masterwork banded mail for a creature two sizes smaller, one suit of
masterwork half-plate for a creature three sizes smaller, or one
masterwork breastplate or suit of full plate for a creature four
sizes smaller. In each case, enough hide is available to produce a
small or large masterwork shield in addition to the armor, provided
that the dragon is Large or larger.
Because dragonhide armor isn't made of metal, druids can wear it
without penalty.
Dragonhide armor costs double what masterwork armor of that type
ordinarily costs, but it takes no longer to make than ordinary armor
of that type.
Dragonhide has 10 hit points per inch of thickness and hardness 10.

basically a Medium Dragon can be made into a Small suit of MW Hide armor or a Tiny suit of MW Banded armor. of course with a MW shield if the Dragon is Large...so in this case no shield.

Well, it can't be made into much that has a metagame effect (ie giving bonuses). That doesn't mean you can't make boots, coin purses, cloaks, etc out of it. All kinds of interesting items can be crafted from it :).

yeah, check out the characters in the link in my sig. ;)

Hmmm.... besides the weight issue (I think the +/- 10% total bodyweight is a good enuff ballpark figure to use), how about stench issues, attraction of flies and other blood-smelling/sensing creatures or even monsters???

I dig the "flavor" aspects of dragonhide. It makes a great belt that makes a certain statement in the proper circles. Over the years, I have had several characters with dragonhide belts. :D

Thanks guys. :)

My interpretation of what was written in the draconomicon was that you can make a single medium-sized shield out hide. Am I interpretting it right?
