Dragon + snatch feat = TPK?

Hmm, I really wonder if Dragons are that dangerous...

I want to throw a blue Dragon (young adult, CR10) at them, and they are average 7th level (5 players, 3 Level 8, 2 level 6 or 7).

I use the Dragonstar setting, but the weapon damage has been toned down a bit (in this situation, certainly not a favor for them...)

If I look at the Dragon`s Armor Class, I see this might become really difficult to hit, and the Spell Resistance and Saving Throws aren`t bad, either.
On the other hand I know that some of the players can easily outsmart me and they might be able to come up with great tactics, especially since they will not be surprised finding this Dragon at the time they meet him (at the beginning of the adventure and when they fly to their destination, they won`t expect him, though ...)

Not true. Not with my DMs. We don't coddle the PCs. We don't set up rainbows and special parades and hand them magic items off of trees.

Oh, such a rain of hype is as unto a shower of gold in the dark night.

Among my circle of regular DMs and players, we play it by the numbers. Dragon fights are SUPPOSED to be tough. You DO NOT pull punches. You win some, you lose some, and you have fun either way.

It is always GOOD to see that people are using the technique of CAPITALISING random WORDS in SENTENCES. I HEARTILY approve of this MEME, SCHTICK, METHOD, TACTIC or STRATEGEM.

I'll have fun any which way I please. And sometimes, I have no problems playing monsters dumb, because this also means the players don't feel pressured to optimise their tactics. A tactically optimised game often feels more like a session of Rogue Spear than anything resembling fantasy.

All we do as DMs is make sure the encounter is CR-appropriate.

Did I say anything else?

When my Greyhawk DM threw that green dragon at us I spoke of earlier, we thought we were fuxxored. It attacked from the wing. It breathed and swooped out of range. It shrugged off some spells and cast some of its own. Our fighters couldn't hit it. Our sorcerer hid and wouldn't attack it. It whittled away at our acid protection spells with impunity for several rounds.

And then our psion used his head and suggested to the green that it land. And because of that we won.

Tch. And the dragon didn't save? You're slipping.

I have been in several 3E dragon fights where DMs pulled out all the stops. Yes, they are HAIRY encounters. Yes, characters may die. That is INTENDED. It's SUPPOSED to be tough. It's a dragon.

Again, I see the RANDOM CAPITALISATION method in use. However, for BEST effects, you really should also use -- lots of EM DASHES -- to simulate talking in DISCONNECTED WORD BUBBLES -- as was done --- in the GOLDEN AGE of COMICS. And not only that -- EXCLAMATION MARKS!!! You must have lots -- and lots -- of EXCLAMATION MARKS!!!! To truly capture that CLASSIC -- DECLAMATORY STYLE!!!!!

A dragon fight is tough. So what? It should be no tougher or easier than any other fight of (roughly) the same CR. If you fight a CR 10 dragon, it should be no more or less memorable than any other CR 10 fight, eg against a demon, or a band of NPC villains, or whatever. D&D provides a whole spectrum of fantastic adversaries, and dragons are only one of these.

But it is by no means invincible, and if the players are smart or lucky they can win. And in years to come they will remember that fight. I remember every 3E dragon encounter I have had, because they have all been memorable.

It must be terrible not to remember any other encounter you had.

... Oh, you DO remember the other encounters you had? My bad. In which case, who gives two hoots about your dragons?

So stop selling your BS, hong. I'm not buying :p

Unfortunately, you forgot to use the RANDOM CAPS in your signoff, so I completely MISSED it. What a TERRIBLE omission.

Please. Combat tactics are part of the game. Play smart and win, or play dumb and have fun rerolling a new character.

I disagree. Obviously, so do the devs - hence the intentional undercon.

I do. As do my friends. You know, the people to whom it matters (IE, not you.) Not to mention, the game is, er, Dungeons and DRAGONS. They have always the game's special monster. Oh, darn, sorry, there goes my caps lock key. I know how that bugs you.

You're not as cool as you think you are, hong. Actually, you're more of a troll.
