Why don't you consider anything after Dragons of Summer Flame to be DL? Did you read anything after DoSF? I'm not being combative, I'm just trying to gauge what it is about DL that you think was lost after the Chaos War.

Yeah, I read a lot of it.

It's not that it wouldn't make a fine setting for someone. But I sort of "grew up" on the original Dragonlance. It was a very specific thing for me, with very specific setting points, flavour, etc. Then along comes DoSF, the gods get taken away, magic is on the decline, the political situation becomes something else, major power groups no longer are, new power groups arise...

It's just a completely different setting, to me. Not the Dragonlance I grew up on. I have the same complaints about the "new" FR, though not to the same level, since it didn't change nearly as much.

That was how I pretty much felt until I read The War of Souls trilogy. Have you read it? The gods came back. Magic is back the way it was, with the addition of Mystic channelers. Some evil military forces are on Ansalon that weren't there in the 4th Age, but I consider that a plus.

Yeah, I read it. Waited with baited breath for each book to come out, hoping that the changes were undone...

There are still a lot of lasting scars that I wish weren't there, though. That would be a lot of spoilers if someone hasn't read the book, though.

Fair enough. What you call "lasting scars" I call "adventure hooks".

I tried not to give too much away about the War of Souls in case you hadn't read it. You might want to edit your post a bit or make mention that it has some pretty big spoilers for the end of the trilogy in case someone here is thinking about checking it out.

Pretty much anything before "Dragons of Summer Flame".

So you'll be happy to know that the DLCS supposedly supports all eras (albeit with fifth age as the standard).

Also from an interview on Dragonlance.com ( http://www.dragonlance.com/features/interviews/display.asp?id=11923 )
Will Sovereign Press be addressing the War of the Lance and the events in Legends?

[Jamie] We are planning a huge Companion sourcebook on the War of the Lance, that will incorporate a lot of source material derived from the original modules and novels. Another product will follow based on Legends, and will deal with time travel and the post-War of the Lance era.

Sounds good to me !

So they are sticking with the 3.5 Sorcerer. That really sucks! That makes absolutely no sense since the 5th Age magic was a free-form magic system!

Alright. That's it. I've lost all interest in that book now.

From the same interview :
How did you tackle sorcery and mysticism?

[Jamie] Sorcery and Mysticism really evolved over the course of design, with a lot of back and forth between Sovereign Press and the Wizards of the Coast. Ultimately the decision was to keep the sorcerer class almost completely untouched, with the mystic written as a divine magic counterpart to the sorcerer.

Those who would like their mystic or sorcerer characters to match a bit closer with the SAGA game material should check out the Citadel Mystic and Academy Sorcerer prestige classes in Age of Mortals.

It appears to me they are trying to please as many DL fans as possible, in a good way, and still make their products very accessible to the general D&D crowd.

I for one will pick up this setting book and at least some of the supplements.

Dude, age ain't nothing but a number.
Dragonlance is Dragonlance, be it wizards and clerics or sorcerors and mystics.

The fourth age ended years ago, and its time for the setting to move on. there is so much potential now that its hard not to be excited.
Dude, I turned away from DL long ago because of SAGA and a different 5th Age tailor-made for SAGA.

I'm coming back because DL is returning to its D&D root. So I'm going to start where I left off ... not the disappointed 5th Age but the exciting 4th Age of the classic Chronicles and Legends trilogies.

But that's me.

Just like Star Wars, everyone have their favorite time period setting. Heck, in Forgotten Realms I didn't allow firearms to exist.

i guess i was never the typical dragonlance fan. I grew up with the setting, spent half of my life with it (past 11 years). It helped me come to terms with being a hindu in a modern society, and helped bring me closer to my roots as a person. To me Dragonlance is about struggle to find yourself and to find God, and both the fourth and fifth ages exemplified that.

Admittedly, the fourth age is solidly judeo-christian, and the fifth age is hindu/buddhist, but the core goals are the same.

And as a gamer, i love running in both eras, because there are always things to do =)

My current campaign is going through an alternate chaos war scenario.

I want my 4th Age Dragonlance.

P.S. I better not see any of those wussy namby-pamby SAGA card in the book.

I agree. I've lost interest in buying the book because of this.

Dragons of Summer Flame was the perfect way to end a series, and IMHO, the books after this one are like reading a bad sequal.
