Dragonlance since the Time of the Twins

Well, that is quite the question... after ToT, Caramon and Tika had kids. Two of them grew up to be Solamnic Knights, the other, Palin, a white robed mage.

Most of it is detailed in Dragons of Summer Flame, which is often seen as either the best or the worst of Weis and Hickmans Dragonlance novels.

Hmmm...

A knightly order to mirror the solamnic knights appears: the knights of Takhisis. Same discipline, other ideals.

The chaos war starts. Apparently, the graygem of Gargath was in fact the entire god Chaos, but in imprisoned form (Reorx made a slight mistake, he only wanted a little bit of chaos to ensure neutrality on Ansolon). The irda destroy the graygem, letting loose chaos, who is in one helluva bad mood.

The other gods had foreseen this, and hance had given Takhisis control of the entire world, so that the mortals could stand up to Chaos.

about a dozen people, among which Steel Brightblade (son of Kitiara and Sturm), Palin and Tasslehof seek to get one drop of blood from the god chaos, so he can once again be captured in the gem. Tasslehof gets stepped on by the enormous manifestation of the god, while he was carring Rabbitslayer. Chaos is defeated, old gods leave, moons leave, the old magic is gone, very big dragons start waging war for control of Krynn.

That is basically the story in a nutshell.

After the old magic left krynn at the end of the Chaos War, the world really started sucking :)

Anyhow, it looks like now at least one of the old gods is back on Krynn, for who knows what reason.

I think, Tsyr, that we are the most knowledgeable about Dragonlance here. However, I disagree with the suckiness of Fifth Age. Any Dragonlance novel not written by W&H seemed to automatically suck, whether it was written in 3rd, 4th or 5th age, with certain works being even crappier then I could have ever imagined.

I kind of like the war of souls trilogy up to now.

Agreed on that. A cataclysmic war every 50 years is starting to grow really old really fast. The whole balance of power right after the war of the lance was so interesting... all the religions finding their place back into society... <nostalgic sigh>

So, to sum up the replies, Flexor, you haven't missed much. You are free, and indeed will probably retain your sanity longer if you do, to ignore any Dragonlance novel not written by Weiss/Hickman. That's pretty much everything you haven't read with the following exceptions:

* The Second Generation (A collection of short stories written by Weiss/Hickman that appeared in various and sundry anthologies after the Twins trilogy) -- Tanin, Palin and Sturm are all the sons of Caramon, and they go on various adventures together, sometimes with Tas, all of which are relevant to the next book.

* Dragons of Summer Flame -- Palin, Tas, and friends must stop Chaos from destroying the world. They do, but the world is shattered, with severe side effects. Weiss/Hickman essentially washed their hands of the entire setting with this book, all at TSR's behest, which at least Tracey took personally. IIRC, they never published another thing under TSR till WotC took over.

* various "5th Age" crap that you can safely ignore -- Weiss/Hickman were out of the picture and had no control over the world, which the authors TSR put on the project essentially wrecked even further than DoSF did.

* Dragons of a Fallen Sun (First in the new War of Souls trilogy) -- Tasslehoff comes into the 5th Age world from the past using the device of time journeying, which he used right before the end of Dragons of Summer Flame. Nobody believes his outlandish tale, of course. You'll have to read the book to find out. :)

* Dragons of a Lost Star (Book two of the War of Souls) -- I won't tell you a thing about this book, it's too damn good! Or bad. Depends on your POV, I suppose. :)

* Dragons of a Vanished Moon (Book three of the War of Souls) -- Beats me, it's not gonna be published until June!!!

Oh, and for those of you who, like me, hate all non-Weiss/Hickman Dragonlance novelists, I found this funnly little linky... it's the Dragonlance Author's guide to naming a new character.

Thanks for the info. I was planning on asking the same question. I bought dragons of a fallen sun quite a while ago but still haven't started on it because I last read dragonlance about 10 years ago? and I couldn't remember much of what had happened. I hope this new series fills me with the warm fuzziness that the chronicles and legends did. I still remember crying when Flint died. :)
