Dragonlance

So how many people here have read the Dragonlance sagas? I've mainly read the ones written about Tanis and them. But Laurana is my favorite chracter and so is Tasslehoff. I think the Dragonlacne books are a work of art, just as good as the LOTR books anyday.

I've read the original trilogy, and the War of the Twins. They are pretty good, with some things that have gone on to become cliches and classics (how many half-elves end up like Tanis, for example?).

But as good as LotR? Not a chance. :)

I love Dragonlance books, i've read a ton of them. I'm look forward to reading more in the future.

As good as LOTR? I'd say on the whole, no, but there are specific books that i would argue are pretty damn close. Mainly legends, which is a series i think i've reread more then any other ever. Heck when it comes to LOTR i've never actaully made it all the way through. I really need to buckle down and give it another shot. The main reason you'll probably get a ton of nay's on this IMO is because LOTR is a classic and there fore automatically gets afforded more credit then anything new. I mean when you get right to it LOTR doesn't hold a candle to WOT or the song of fire and ice, but it's very few people that will admit that.

I'm not sure about the comment on WoT.

I'm a pretty faithfull reader but the most recent book was TERRIBLE. I mean... nothing happened!!!!! Okay... minor hijacking of this thread by me over.

and yes, I read Dragonlance (the original 7) and I loved 'em.

Dragonlance was the shizzy when I was in Junior High. Everyone read 'em. I remember really liking The Legend of Huma, that had a good epic feel. Haven't read any in at least 12 years, though.

Probably the most under-rated trilogy (not penned by Weis and Hickman) is the Elven Nation trilogy. That was one I really enjoyed and had some solid writing. Beyond that, Legend of Huma was good and so was the Villains book that had the black dragon as the central figure.

I've only read 70 of the books so far. :)

The Defenders of Magic trilogy is even better than what W&H have written. The Black Wing and Lord Toede are the best non-trilogy books.

I still think the Dragonlance books are at least as good as the LOTR series. So is The Wheel of Time and Song of Ice and Fire. I like all of those series.

My favorite character always tends to be an elf from most all series or someone like an elf, so maybe that is why I think Tanis is so cool. And in Song of Ice and Fire Dany is the best! In Wheel of Time I like Nynaeve.

Well, since you asked, the Dragonlance books, regardless of author, are the lowest form of trash fantasy, the absolute nadir of the literary form, written to corporate specifications and churned out on a never-ending assembly line of bilge. They are, without exception so far as I've read, poorly-written, amateurishly plotted, juvenile, without the slightest shred of imagination and lacking utterly in anything remotely compelling. I wouldn't ask Tolkien to wipe his backside with them. I was writing better fiction in my high school Creative Writing class.

Just my opinion.

LOTR doesn't hold a candle to WOT

This is a joke, right? Good.

Robert Jordan is a former romance novelist who realized that he could make more money writing fantasy. I'll be the first to admit that there are better series or novels than LotR, but it would take divine intervention to put WoT in that category.
