OSR Dragonslayer RPG truly delivers.

So compared to OSE, how would those who have played this rate Dragonslayer? It looks cool, and well laid out in reviews, but does it do anything different other than having a Monk class and maybe some other classes? It still B/X at heart right? The big thing that would stop me from running this is the standard magic system, as I'm looking for something with a bit more danger.
Sorry for the late reply; I've been on vacation!

I've noticed over the years posting about OSR games that what one person considers "different enough" varies widely. Take Shadowdark for instance; in the same threads you'll see people complaining that it's just a carbon copy of B/X and others that wont even give it a look through because of how radically it departs from B/X! 😄

That said, I don't particularly like to compare it to B/X myself since I feel like it has more in common with AD&D. This of course makes it similar to B/X (and completely compatible), but I feel it has enough rule changes (many discussed on this thread) to set it apart.

It's two main draws for me are its:
  • Killer old school artwork.
  • Understanding why Gary's vision of D&D" is "read D&D" and needs to preserved.

I've read several OSR editions, looking for the right balance of classic D&D with a mix of the best from AD&D. Dragonslayer wins hands down. Nothing comes close. This is far more than a few house rules tacked on. This is an excellent edition in its own right and something no one else has even come close to. It has enough detail in the core rulebook to use it for the rest of your life but lacks the technical pieces of AD&D. Arguably the best the version of D&D on the market. I'm not a fan of the cancel culture so most of the comments in this thread are irrelevant. If you want a great game, play Dragonslayer and let the work speak for itself. I don't know what the guy believes, but everyone has a right to their own beliefs and free speech. The comments above are just toxic and should be deleted for being libel. Hate speech denouncing individuals should not be tolerated on any forums.

Can't be libel if it's true. If you "don't know what the believes," he's been kind enough to do lots of blogging and writing to make it clear.

Also... "Hate speech denouncing individuals should not be tolerated on any forums." Are... are you saying that people who denounce hate speech shouldn't be tolerated? That's... certainly a take.

I swear, the people that complain about cancel culture and the ones who keep saying how ACKS or this game are awesome is a near circle. Coincidence? Makes me think people don't really care how good or bad a game is, if they align with the creator's politics then it's the best thing since sliced bread.

You seem very confused.

Does everybody have a right to free speech, or should toxic speech be deleted? Or is it just free speech you agree with that everyone has a right to, while speech that you disagree with should be deleted? Who decides whether speech is ‘free’ or ‘toxic’? You?

Please do clarify. It’s very confusing.

Also, are you he?

I cannot agree. The YouTuber from the link in the OP says this version of B/X is not transformative.
Having skimmed the book from the youtube video, the book is neatly put together but it does not provide anything new or interesting, IMO of course.

There are far better ideas for B/X out there. Tweaking a few spells or monsters is not enough to warrant another book.

Have not read the thread, but the art of the Ancestry options on page 1 is perfect, who did it?
Kennon James…saw him at Gary Con and lamented I only had pdf handy for the game I played.

I played a game and enjoyed it. The friar Tuck monk is cool…quarterstaff fighter who can do Gregorian chants to cancel charms…

I bought it due to the cool ass art. Easley did the cover.

I would pla again but also bought shadowdark which simply has my attention now…

As to the creator…no comment? Don’t know him….but which I had the artist sign my book!
