Dreseden Files RPG is Awesome

Despite being a rabid FATE fan, I drug my feet ordering this... too much stuff going in my life right now.

But I ordered, and got the PDFs. Very nice.

How well would this game be in a non-Harry setting? Does it port easily to the modern world without the novels' characters?

I'm thinking it'd be a nice basis for Charles Stross' Laundry books (Cthulhu-mythos spy thrillers).

The templates are probably the most directly tied to the Dresden-verse aspect of the rules, but it'd be easy to make new ones.

Hi,

Do you think it would work with one GM and one player? I'm looking for something new to run for my wife. We're both fans of the books.

Cheers

Not as well with a group without a little work. Aspects in the game can be used tio link characters and help define relationships. It sets up well for a group but with some clever thinking or some good NPCs that can still happen in a solo game.

I bet it would be fun though! Dresden (in the first three books) seems to be pretty much a solo guy, although he gets friends to help at all the right places. Okay, the third book turns into more of a traditional RPG adventuring group at the end. Seems to me that the way FATE plays that with the right work a solo adventure would be awesome. More mystery oriented, less combat, and maybe a couple interesting NPC friends to come along and help where needed. Hell, you could even allow extra Companions for your wife's PC that would make up the gap. Not sure if the Companion rules are in Dresden, but they would port over easy. The Companion rules are scattered over the SotC SRD and not in one neat place, but yeah, I think that would work.

I heard about this, and as a fan of both the show and the books, I would like to know whether or not you need some other Core rulebook to play this or not (I stupidly went out and bought a copy of MtA and was wondering for a short while where all the combat rules and character creation rule were)

There are 2 core books "Your Story" and "Our World". The first enables you to create characters, city elements and basically run the game. The World book provides more details into the different in game groups, NPC's, Chicago etc.

Is the World book a "must have"? IMHO, it's not if you are well versed in the books themselves. But the examples of high lv and low lv NPC's is nice to have as are the details of Chicago.

The World book is completely optional. It describes the Dresden universe as if that were a campaign with NPCs. It has good info and I think we ll worth the money but I'm using it very little to create my own game and characters.

This is one game I am really looking forward to reading as soon as the ENnies judging is done... it is sitting on my hard drive awaiting my attention.

I've read the books and seen the TV show - much preferred the books!

Right on!

Glad to see so many folks excited. I'd heard about this thread starting up while I was at Origins, but I had less than zero time to go looking for it until now.

I *think* everyone's questions have been answered by other posters, but if something's still lingering, let me know!

First let me say I'm really digging this game, it's my first exposure to FATE and I'm enjoying it immensely as I make my way through the two books. I am curious though if we will see any supplementary material for DFRPG down the road or if the two books are pretty much it.
