That is correct... But polymorph specifically states you get new STR/CON/DEX... whereas Alter Self specifically states you keep your originals.

So, if you get new ones, you should also get to use the new ones to their fullest. Just remember to heal before changing back to your original form or you may just die.

This has been argued to death, but I'll stick with the interpretation that Andy Collins (the guy responsible for the 3.5 PHB) said was the intention: In polymoprh effects, just like alter self effects, there is no hit point change. Polymorph incorporates the 'hit points do not change' clause from alter self.

There was a sage ruling that directly opposed this statement, but I'll go with the guy that was responsible for the text over anyone else.

As for shapes that have some merit, the dire bat is an interesting shape. It is not very strong offensively, but it has flight and a great AC.

I was convinced by that line of reasoning until I read the Reincarnate text. It uses the exact same wording as Polymorph.

While I can see avoiding modifying HPs in the case of Polymorph as a matter of ease of use and a minor power down, applying the same robotic approach to Reincarnate creates a number weird corner cases for no good reason.

I am now convinced that "unchanged" HPs merely indicates that you do not bother to reroll.

Tigers/Dire Tigers aren't as good as they first look... you don't get the creatures feats, only its racial bonus feats, so if you turn into tigers, rhinocerouses etc etc you have to remember to drop the damage on their attacks by 1 die as you don't benefit from their improved natural attack feats. Ie. Druids in tiger form claw at 1d6, not 1d8... Rhinos gore at 1d8, not 2d6 etc.

On the other hand even with this reduced damage an animal growthed rhinocerous on a charge deals 4d6 + 36 = 50 average damage per charge. Then see the DMs look when you tell him to make fortitude rolls for his NPCs to avoid death from massive damage ;) (<---- popular variant rule)
