DriveThruRPG is down! GRR!

Everybody forget the major reason to buy PDFs. The old lady can see me put a new book on the bookshelf but has no idea how much I spend on PDFs

Also note that you can hit places like Cartridge World and get remanufactured toner carts for roughly half to 75% of the retail price - I just picked up a new drum for the Samsung here in austin for about $30.

Excuses not to buy a laser printer:

1. "I like buying ink just so that it can dry out before I completely use the cartridge."

2. "I don't know. Lasers are pretty scary. I mean, I saw Star Wars and lasers hurt R2."

3. "My inkjet printer was free. Why should I pay for a printer when the computer companies give them away?"

4. "If I had a laser printer I would start buying PDFs and before I knew it I'd be up at 3 am buying just one more."

You've got 8 more reasons to go there buddy before you hit A Dozen Excuses Not To Buy A Lazer Printer

Well, I think you guys have convinced me to go Laser, even though I do print a bunch of dungeon tiles, etc... So that "wax" thing might be an issue for me.

Toner flaking can be a problem if you're using glossy paper that isn't designed for laser printers. Otherwise, it shouldn't be an issue.

You don't actually have to throw out the inkjet printer. Just don't use it for anything but your tiles and modelling.

I've never... ever... had a problem getting a download from a PDF.

When RPGnet was doing their own PDF store (prior to the current RPGnet/RPGshop endeavor), I frequently didn't get orders that I paid for. And the I never got their support staff to reply to an email, leaving me to track down the product publishers on my own, explain to them how crappy the RPGnet service was, and effectively beg for a copy of something that RPGnet had already charged my credit card for. :(

That said, I've never had this problem with RPGNow, DriveThru RPG, or any of the affiliated game stores (including RPGNet). I think that things have come a long way since those early days.

If you're liking your .pdf downloads, go right ahead, but a lot of people are quite happy with using and buying books instead of computer files.

Ph3ar teh New!

I think the issue is that many people invent reasons to avoid PDF games (e.g. "Websites have downtime!"), when it's obvious that the only reason they're avoiding such prodcuts is because they harbor a fear of all things new and different.

Honestly, I'm somewhat surprised that products like OSIRC have done as well as they have, given that many of the folks who they are aimed at fear buying books printed on acid-free paper (to say nothing of e-books).

If more people posited reasons based in rational thought for avoiding PDF games, I might be dissuaded from my views. . . but I don't see to much of that reasoning. Usually, it's all "Because it's new, it's eeeeevil!"

[Note: I'm also absolutely convinced that this fear accounts for many screeds against small-press games and new editions of old games, as well.]
