DriveThruRPG is down! GRR!

I have one friend who does not buy pdf books and has a good reason for it. While he does not have to worry about pirating a print product, he fears that he would pirate the pdfs (distribute them freely to others) without thinking about it. Since he is very anti-piracy not trusting himself in this regard he sees as a valid reason to avoid the medium. I can't say I disagree with him, even if I do feel that he should just grow up.

No offense, but that sounds like more of an excuse than a reason -- if one doesn't want to pirate things, they don't. "I subconsciously pirated these PDF games!" sounds like a bunch of hooey to me. I don't know of anybody who subconsciously commits crimes*.

*Well, there's Ruth Finley, but that's a pretty extreme case -- and one largely dismissed as a deliberate cry for attention that was capitalized on by some unscrupulous psychiatrists after the fact (as were many MPSD cases).

I won't buy a car because I'm afraid I'll use it as the get away vehicle in a crime and I"m very much against armed robbery.

Your friend obviously doesnt understand how piracy works. You can't do it unless you're using file sharing programs and if thats the case move the copywrited stuff to another drive. If someones getting info off your computer through hacking its not pirating, and even then their looking for something better than PDFS.

woah...

PDFs have proven more useful for today's average gamer because of the increase in the business of the overall american.

Woah is right. Judging by the sales of PDFs I'm pretty sure today's average gamer doesn't buy them. And PDFs really haven't proven anything, if they had they would be a lot more popular.

I think pdfs don't tap the player market.

I agree with you guys that it's pretty thin reasoning. However you are incorrect. You can pirate pdfs by giving coppies to people who hadn't purchased them. You do not need file sharing for this you can use CDs, Floppies, Thumb Drives, Email Attachments, etc.

Yes, I know. I believe only Don Tadow said otherwise. What I said was that people don't pirate things subconsciously ;)
