Well, if you've read RA Salvatore's Dark Elf Trilogy, then it's safe to say that yes, he's always been that good, or at least not nearly as evil as the rest of his race. Since Salvatore is the creator of Drizzt, it's hard to dispute his account of Drizzt's upbringing.

So yes, it is a troll. A good troll. Drizzt was always a good troll.
