I agree with Ogrok. It is important to track the Tricks.
Down is an important Trick because Animals automatically continue to fight whomever last injured them unless successfully instructed otherwise with the Handle Animal skill.
And you need Attack twice, or the Companion will refuse to fight weird things like undead.
This takes away a measure of tactical flexibility, especially if you are riding the Companion and need to burn an MEA. When you get to higher levels, it is nice to be able to send the Companion in to open a Flank and Aid Other. The advanced Companion types give you fewer bonus tricks, so you lose out on some options (unless you spend the MEA).
