Druid multiple animal companions

In 3.5 there is no longer an option to have more (smaller) animal companions instead of a (bigger) one. There is also no more Animal Friendship spell.

But incidentally, can you get more "companions" by just using Animal Empathy or Charm Animal or something similar, and then teaching tricks with Handle Animal? I mean, "companions" like they were in 3.5 (which means basically normal trained animals). All of a sudden, I feel like 3.0 animal companions just could have been got by anyone... except that maybe the druid's ones were more loyal

I might, as a house rule, let a druid take Leadership and gain animal followers that way.

Nothing in the rules prevents a Druid from acquiring, training, and using other animals.

For me, the single strong animal companion is so much better at higher levels. A bark skinned, bull's strengthed, ox enduranced, dire tiger is very frightening thing to behold. I hate being pounced on. Fireballs use to just wipe out Druid and Ranger animal companions.

And leadership is great when you start Awakening Animals and Plants. Make a Pack of intelligent wolves trained as monks. Frightening.
