A player has just started a druid/ranger and I feel there should be some benifit to the combo, how does the added caster levels for multiclass from UA work ?
any one have comments on using those rules?

I don't know how the rules work in UA, but you could just use the following house rule:

Have him use the druid spellcasting list. Every 2 ranger levels add 1 to the druid caster level. He doesn't get any ranger spells (no problem here I think).

The animal companion is slightly trickier: I'd go with the effective druid caster level (i.e DR + 1/2 Rang) instead of (DR+Rang -3)

Why should he get more then what the two classes offer? THese classes have great synergy together in style.

I agree they have good synergy, but I think he wants a different way of handling their very similar abilities. Like combining the animal companion levels (as in Uncanny dodge levels for barb/rogues). About the spellcasting, I just proposed it for those guys who believe that multiclassing a spellcaster is underpowered (I'm not a sure about this myself).

Spellcasters who multiclass give up direct spell power in exchange for greater versatility, combat staying power, and/or greater fighting prowess. IMO it's not necessary to add an extra boost to help a multiclassed spellcaster "keep up with the Joneses" in the caster community.

Hey I told you I wasn't sure about it :D

Personally, I always multiclass my spellcasters, specially clerics. Just because I don't have a problem with multiclassing spellcasters doesn't mean I can't offer advice to someone who wants to give them an umph.

By the way EVILHALFLING, I assumed that's what you were asking for. If it's not, disregard it.

The Magic Ratign rules from UA give some benefit for spellcasting, yes - in terms of caster elvel for SR, duration,r ange, etc. But not for spells per day.

A ranger (or paladin or bard) gets, from levels 1-20, a magic rating of [0/1/1/2/2/3/3/4/4/5/5/6/6/7/7/8/8/9/9/10/10] (note the simple pattern). Druids (or clerics, sorcerors, and wizards) get magic ratign equal to their class level. Everything else gets a pattern of [0/0/0/1/1/1/2/2/2/...].

Your caster level for purposes of everything except spellsper day and maximum spell level castable, is the sumof all your magic ratings.

So a Ranger(5)/Druid(5) would have a magic rating of 7; he would cast the same spells-per-day as any other druid(5), and as any other Ranger(5) ... but the duration, range, number of targets, damage, area, and SR penetration (etc) woudl all be based on a caster level of 7.

For what your player is looking for, the Prestige Ranger (also from UA) might be better. Prerequisites are BAB +4; Knowledge(nature) 2 ranks, survival 4 ranks; endurance, track, and either rapid shot OR two-weapon fighting; and lastly, the ability to cast calm animals as a divine spell.

The class gives all of the ranger's goodies over the course of 15 levels, in terms of class abilities. And ... every even-numbered level gives +1 spellcaster level! Thus, a Fighter(2)/Druid(3)/Prestige Ranger(15) would cast spells as a 9th level druid.

Animal Companion progression for hte Prestige Ranger is full druid rate, not the half-rate that rangers normally get. So the same example character woudl have the animal companion of an 18th level Druid.

I recommend using the Ranger as prestige class variant in Unearthed Arcana. That would allow proper stacking of spellcasting levels, and Animal Companion levels should stack (0.5xRanger_level+1.0xDruid_level).

For spellcasting levels, if you don't use the Ranger as prestige class variant, for caster level only (not spell access) use (0.5xRanger_level+1.0xDruid_level). [That's per the rule in Unearthed Arcana for multiclassed spellcasters.]
